Software Defined WAN
As enterprise cloud adoption accelerates the user experience impact of traditional MPLS WAN’s is eroding the business value cloud delivers. To access cloud applications a user has to traverse an already busy MPLS WAN to a data centre which no longer hosts their applications only to be exited to the Internet via a central, congested location out of the enterprise data centre. In effect, cloud adoption makes traditional MPLS WAN’s the most expensive way to deliver internet access to cloud services, more often with a poor end user experience.
The modern enterprise is looking to leverage low cost, high bandwidth, internet direct services from each site in place of a legacy MPLS WAN. In this model, a virtual Software Defined WAN, is created using overlay VPN technology on top of the internet services. In this approach, enterprises can access their cloud applications directly which significantly improves the end user experience whilst dramatically lowering network costs without sacrificing the ability to collaborate over a private, software defined, WAN.
